Why Is Semaglutide So Much Cheaper Than Ozempic® or Wegovy®?

Because of an FDA declared shortage, licensed compounding pharmacies are able to manufacture the shot and provide it at a low cost versus the inflated costs of the name brands.

Clinical studies have shown that semaglutide leads to significant weight loss. In the STEP 1 trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine, participants taking a weekly 2.4 mg dose experienced an average weight reduction of 14.9% over 68 weeks, which is about 33.7 pounds. Another study in the same journal reported that after 12 months, patients achieved a total body weight loss of 13.4%, with 22% losing 20% or more of their initial weight.

The FDA could end the shortage at any time, at which point low cost options would be removed from the market.

When Tirzepatide was removed from the FDA’s shortage list in October of 2024, reputable Telehealth providers largely ceased offering compounded injectable forms of Mounjaro® and Zepbound®.

Tirzepatide has shown impressive weight loss results as well. The SURMOUNT-1 trial published in New England Journal of Medicine found that participants receiving the highest dose (15 mg) lost an average of 22.5% over 72 weeks, translating to roughly 52 pounds. Some groups in the study lost up to 27% of their total body weight, or about 64 pounds, highlighting the medication’s significant potential in weight management.

Other companies include very brief video consults that can generally be done same day, or 1-2 days later depending on your availability.

Some companies incorporate blood testing into the process either initially or at certain stages for those who desire additional health feedback during the process. 

According to a systematic review and network meta-analysis published in Diabetes Therapy that compared once-daily oral semaglutide with injectable GLP-1 receptor agonists, oral semaglutide effectively reduced HbA1c levels and body weight, showing comparable or superior outcomes to injectable counterparts.

Given that 93% of patients remained with the study mentioned above, it’s fair to assume the injections are a non-issue. Because they go in the skin, they feel more like a prick, if they’re even noticed.
