Online weight-loss programs exploded in popularity, and most of the well-known ones are legitimate. But fast-growing markets attract corner-cutters, and the difference between a careful clinic and one that's just moving product isn't always obvious from a slick landing page. Run any program through this seven-point check before you sign up.

The 7-point check

  1. Real clinical review. There should be a genuine medical evaluation by a licensed clinician — not an instant, guaranteed prescription off a form.
  2. Named, licensed prescribers. You should be able to find out who is prescribing and that they're licensed in your area.
  3. A way to reach someone. Legit programs give you a clear channel to a clinician for questions and side effects. If support is a black hole, walk away.
  4. Transparent pricing. The total cost — medication, membership, visits — should be clear before you pay, not revealed at checkout.
  5. Honest medication information. Clear detail on whether medications are branded or compounded, and which pharmacies are used.
  6. Realistic claims. Be wary of guaranteed results or dramatic promises. Responsible programs describe typical outcomes, not miracles.
  7. A sane cancellation and exit policy. No punitive lock-in, and a real answer for how you taper or maintain. See what happens when you stop.

Biggest single red flag

A "guaranteed" prescription with no meaningful medical review. A clinician's job is to decide whether a medication is safe for you — a program that skips that isn't offering a shortcut, it's skipping the part that keeps you safe.

How we apply this

Every program in our lineup is scored on transparency and clinical support partly against this exact checklist. It's why our rankings favor programs with real clinician involvement even when cheaper options exist. Start with our comparison chart and you've already cleared most of these checks.

General information only, not medical advice. When in doubt about a provider's legitimacy, consult your own clinician or your regional health authority.
